are emerging from newtown, connecticut. as shots drew nearer, teacher victoria soto threw herself between the gunman and her students. her family tells us how she should be remembered. >>> president obama comforting the families of those killed and how he remembers the love and prayers of a nation. we'll share his speech from last night's vigil. part of the speech, a call to action. president obama vowing to prevent another massacre. today gun control seems to have a tone of determination. a special edition of "newsroom" begins right now. >>> good morning to you. i'm carol costello here in atlanta. joining me shortly, don lemon. hees in newtown, connecticut. let's begin here, shall we? we'll begin with the latest at sandy hook elementary school. today the first of the funerals get under way. 6-year-old jack pinto and noah pozner will be the first of the 26 victims laid to rest. we'll also learning more about the remarkable acts of heroism. one teacher, ann marie murphy, died while shielding students with her body. another read to kids to distract them from the gunshots that exploded outsi

"cnn newsroom" continues now with brooke baldwin who is in newtown, connecticut. >>> i'm brooke baldwin live today in newtown, connecticut, where today the new reality is sinking in. today parents are living alongside an empty room of the child they lost. left behind in that room, pajamas, favorite toys, books they always read together, parents who know this, even the smell of their child's pillow. and these first responders being called heroes, but still day in and day out living with the images no one could have prepared them to see. today, families are deciding on coffins, head stones, choosing songs that will play at the funerals of first graders. want to tell you about the two little boys who are actually being remembered right now. the funeral for 6-year-old jack pinto began just about an hour ago. jack will be laid to rest today in newtown village cemetery. just a little bit of background on this 6-year-old, jack adored football, his favorite player was new york giants

not only connecticut but the nation in mourning. he spoke at the newtown vigil last night as both a president and a father. >> we can't tolerate this anymore. these tragedies must end. and to end them, we must change. there's only one thing we can be sure of. that's the love that we have for our children, for our families, for each other. god has called them all home. for those of us who remain, let us find the strength to carry on and make our country worthy of their memory. >> we are joined by pastor rocky veech of connections church in newtown, connecticut, and pastor joey newton of the newtown bible church. pastor rocky, you were also a pastor in denver when columbine happened in 1999. what can you tell us about how a community starts to heal from something like this? >> i think it starts to heal right away with the funerals like here today. and community starts to come together. i noticed living in columbine, that was the beginning. those were the beginning signs of the healing that did take weeks after that. >> you know, this i guess is to both of you. we speend a lot of tim

tears. this is a very sad day, of raw emotion here in newtown, connecticut, as families begin burying the children killed in the massacre at the sandy hook elementary school right down the road from where we are right now. we're watching all of this unfold, and the pain is clearly, clearly evident. while every day here in new town is sad, today, it's especially, it's especially sad. this afternoon, the first funerals were held for victims of the elementary school massacre. connecticut's governor, you just saw him here, he attended one of the services today, and he summed it up this way, and i'm quoting him, you see little coffins and your heart starts to ache. as this town and the nation tries to come to grips with this huge, huge tragedy, the investigation is focusing in on the question why. some of the answers may come from a computer found in the home where the gunman, adam lanza, lived with his mother. cnn's national correspondent deborah feyerick is keeping track of the latest developments. she's joining us now live with more. what are you learning, deb? >> wolf, we can tell you

>>> as you can imagine, a cloud of grief hangs over newtown, connecticut, today. the community begins the first of more than two dozen heart-wrenching good-byes. funerals for two of the 6-year-olds killed in the elementary school massacre are being held today. i'm suzanne malveaux in atlanta with "newsroom" special coverage as newtown remembers. >> reporter: and i'm wolf blitzer here in newtown, connecticut. the funerals will continue for days as the 20 children, the 6 teachers are laid to rest. all this follows a very moving and emotional service last night. ♪ it includes a prayer sung by a rabbi, readings from the bible and the koran, prayers from christian leaders and a promise from president obama. >> in the coming weeks, i'll use whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens from law enforcement, to mental health professionals, to parents and educators in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this. >> tonight the crowd at the prayer service gave a standing ovation to the first responders, those who answered the call at sandy hook elementary sc
